Fishing Lure Tips and Proper Care

We are often asked the question of how do you keep your fishing lures in good shape, what is proper lure care. Like any other piece of fishing tackle or gear you want to take care of your equipment. When you hit the docks after a day of fishing you wash your boat down, you rinse all your rods and reels too. So why wouldn't you give the same attention to your fishing tackle?

Maybe because there are no moving parts, or because lures aren't as expensive as rod n reels. Well if you have bought any rigs or fishing tackle lately then you know prices have gone thru the roof and with so many new fang dangled high priced lures on the market now-a-days it just doesn't make good sense to throw a lure in a 5 gallon bucket and forget about it. That's where the hair gets ruined, the hooks get dull, and where they are just forgotten till they go rotten.

OK, let's answer the question of how do you keep your lures in like new fishing shape. It's a great question and believe it or not most anglers do just throw their lures in a bucket until the next trip. You know that bucket trick is just fine if you have plenty of money to spend on more tackle, but when you fish for a living, or if you have a fishing budget then taking care of your tackle and lures means the next days trip will not require a lot of work to get ready and you won't have to spend an extra chunk of money on rigs before every trip.

Here's what I do after a day of fishing - Make sure you remove any bait fragments that may be left on your lure including cut bait, squids, and pork rinds, you know what happens when those things dry on the hook. Then I recommend washing your lures with fresh water because you definitely want to get that salt off as it is corrosive over the long term.

Now for your buck tails you can reach in your pocket and grab your comb or brush and comb out the hair to get the twists and tangles out. Now hang them up so they can dry and you are done. It may sound like a bit much but most anglers can't afford to buy lures over and over especially with the cost of gas and diesel going through the roof. Take care of your lures and rigs and you will save money, guaranteed!
